Country Day Receives Perfect VPK Readiness Score

Country Day For Children’s VPK Program Earned a Perfect Score in Kindergarten Readiness from ELC of Brevard.

The voluntary pre-K program is designed to prepare every 4-year-old in Florida for kindergarten and develop the skills they need to become good readers and successful students. Education studies have found that students who participate in these programs are better prepared to succeed and learn in school than students who start their schooling experience in kindergarten.

The VPK program goals are met within the Montessori environment and without deviating from the Montessori method. All four-year-olds in the Montessori classroom receive equal, individually-appropriate, educational opportunities whether or not they are registered in the VPK program.

What is the Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) Provider Kindergarten Readiness Rate?

The Florida Department of Education/State Board of Education is required by law (Section 1002.69(5), Florida Statutes (F.S.)) to calculate and set a minimum kindergarten readiness rate every year for each private or public school VPK Provider of either the School-Year (540 hours) or Summer (300 hours) program. The VPK Provider Kindergarten Readiness Rate measures how well a VPK provider prepares four-year-olds to be ready for kindergarten based upon the Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards for Four-Year Olds (2011). The VPK Standards describe what four-year-old children should know and be able to do by the end of the VPK program.

VPK Standards

The mission of the Florida VPK Education Standards is found in Section 1(b), Article IX of the State Constitution:

Every four-year old child in Florida shall be provided by the State a high quality prekindergarten learning opportunity in the form of an early childhood development and education program which shall be voluntary, high quality, free, and delivered according to professionally accepted standards. An early childhood development and education program means an organized program designed to address and enhance each child’s ability to make age appropriate progress in an appropriate range of settings in the development of language and cognitive capabilities and emotional, social, regulatory, and moral capacities through education in basic skills and such other skills as the Legislature may determine to be appropriate.
